I’ve begun to appreciate shadows more then ever. They not only create depth, they accentuate objects and give them an additional projected existence traveling beyond their physical location. Everyday, in the world all around us, we find an ever-changing landscape of light. We can thank the largest lighting fixtures in our galaxy for that, the Sun and Moon. Lately, I have used this as a key inspiration when I design. As an artist I enjoy collaborating with musicians and artists to help paint a picture through sound and visuals. These are the times when I feel most connected with the greater energy that flows through all of us. When running a light show or production, I usually concentrate on listening more than anything. Anyone can learn the technical side of lighting and master techniques, however the actual act of directing a light show or production requires listening, reaction, and an understanding of music. This is a world of infinite arpeggios, crescendos, loudness, softness, deep swells, and most importantly, silence. Ah yes, silence! It’s the silence between every note and rhythm that is the shadow and silhouette of music performance. It gives every note or color change existence. Without the night you would not appreciate the day. Without the silence you would not appreciate the sounds.
